Report a power cut in England, Scotland or Wales. Useful for EV charging, home charging and power-related safety issues.

Breakdown on a motorway

  1. Move left if possible and switch on hazard lights.
  2. Leave at the next junction or services if you can do so safely.
  3. If you cannot leave, follow orange SOS signs to an emergency area.
  4. Use the free emergency telephone if available. It gives your exact location.
  5. If stopped in a live lane, unable to exit safely, or in danger, stay belted with hazards on and call 999.

On motorways and major A-roads in England, National Highways can be contacted on 0300 123 5000 for road-related help and information.

After an accident

  1. Stop safely. Switch on hazard lights.
  2. Check for injuries and call 999 if anyone needs urgent help.
  3. Move people away from traffic if it is safe to do so.
  4. Exchange details with other drivers.
  5. Take photos of vehicles, road position, damage and surroundings.
  6. Contact your insurer or breakdown provider.

Should I call 999 after a minor crash?

Call 999 if anyone is injured, the road is blocked dangerously, there is aggression, fire, or immediate danger.

Can I stop on the hard shoulder?

Only in an emergency. Leave the vehicle from the side away from traffic if safe, and wait behind the barrier.

What if I break down in a live motorway lane?

Keep seatbelts on, use hazard lights and call 999 immediately if you cannot get to a safe place.
